Liberty Junk Removal does water heater removal from Johnstown out to the rest of Northern Colorado. The usual story is a swap. The old tank started leaking or gave out halfway through a shower, the new one went in, and the old one got left behind. That heavy steel cylinder is what this job takes away.

Installing the new heater is a plumber's work and sits outside this job. Water heater removal picks up after that, with the old tank. It falls under appliance removal and disposal, but the job looks different from hauling a washer, because the tank usually lives in the tightest corner of the house, behind the furnace or at the bottom of a narrow stair.

A good photo saves a back-and-forth. Back up until the whole tank fits in the frame, then take a second shot of the way out, like the basement stairs or the hallway past the closet. If anything else from that corner is leaving, get it in the picture too.

What goes on the truck

  • Old tank water heaters
  • Tankless water heater units
  • Gas and electric water heaters
  • Water heater drain pans
  • Expansion tanks and old pipe
  • Boxes from the new heater
  • Broken basement shelving

These are the usual pieces on this kind of job, not the whole list.

The full list of what goes on the truck, and what doesn't.

Who needs an old water heater hauled away?

Mostly homeowners who just had a new heater put in and are stuck with the old one. Landlords and property managers turning over a rental are the other group, since a rusted tank in the utility closet is one more thing between them and the next tenant.

The load on this job is usually short. It's the old tank, the box and foam the new heater came in, and maybe an expansion tank or a few lengths of copper pipe. When the broken shelving and the boxes around it are going too, and the whole room needs clearing, that's closer to a basement cleanout.

Where does an old water heater end up after it's hauled off?

The old tank goes out as scrap metal and gets recycled. A water heater is mostly steel, a tank inside a metal jacket, so the heaviest thing on this job also has the plainest place to go. The expansion tank and the old pipe usually follow it onto the scrap pile.

The rest of the load splits up. The cardboard and plastic wrap from the new heater's box go to the landfill. A sturdy shelf or an old workbench from the same basement is another matter, and anything like that goes to Habitat for Humanity or a thrift store first.

Can a water heater be carried up from a basement or out of a closet?

Yes. Getting the tank up the basement stairs or out of the closet is part of the job, and it doesn't need to be inched toward the door ahead of time. An old heater is tall and round with nothing good to grab, and a utility closet leaves little space to turn it. All of that is on Liberty Junk Removal's end.

A rusty tank still sitting in its drain pan is fine to leave as it is, and the pan can go out with it.

How much does water heater removal cost?

The minimum for any job is $125. Above it, the price follows the truck space the load fills, and a lone tank takes up less of it than a tank plus half the garage. Carrying the heater out, hauling it and disposing of it are all in the price, with no dump fee added on top.

The price is quoted from your photo or after an in-person look, and the quote stands unless the job turns out larger than the photo showed. Say the picture had only the tank, and then the basement shelving is going too. That's a larger load than the one quoted. The Johnstown junk removal cost page goes into more detail, and you can pay with cash, credit or debit card, Venmo, Zelle, Apple Pay, Google Pay or check.

Can the paint and chemicals near the water heater go too?

Paint can go, yes. Empty cans are preferred, and full cans cost an extra fee. Leftover paint tends to end up on the floor next to a water heater, out of the way, often with a jug of drain opener beside it. The drain opener can go for an extra fee if you ask first. A gas can near the heater stays, and medical or biohazard waste can't go either.

Move those to another spot before pickup day, or point them out when you text the photo, so the quote counts only what's leaving. The tank itself is fine to take, rusty or dented, and so are the shelving and the boxes around it.

Does Liberty Junk Removal haul water heaters outside Johnstown?

Yes. Liberty Junk Removal takes old tanks from homes and rentals all over Northern Colorado, with Johnstown as home base. A heater in Broomfield, Northglenn or Lochbuie comes out just like one closer to home, and the full list of towns on the route shows where else the truck goes.

Hours are 7 AM to 6 PM daily, Saturdays and Sundays too. If the plumber swaps the heater on a Saturday, the old tank can go out on a weekend pickup when there's room on the schedule, instead of waiting in the garage until the next week.

Questions

Questions about water heater removal.

Is there a minimum charge to haul away one water heater?
Yes, $125, the same minimum as any other load.

No. The tank can stay on the basement floor or in the garage, right where it ended up after the swap. Nobody in the house needs to help load it.
How soon can an old water heater be picked up?
It's usually the next day, or same day when the schedule allows.
Can a property manager book a water heater pickup at a rental?
Yes. The manager can handle the photo and the booking without coming out to the property.
Can the old water heater go out with other junk from the basement?
Yes. The broken shelving and the old boxes can ride with the tank on the same trip. Paint can come too, and a gas can stays behind.
